Microsoft today is looked at as boring and old. I see them that way, my friends do and you do as well. It’s the curse of having an operating system like Windows XP that people used for over 10 years. Microsoft has just launched a new video advertisement for IE and I love it. I was born in ’82 and grew up in the 90’s. I had the bowl haircut, a 56k (and 2.4k, 14.4K, 32.2K) modem and remember thinking download speeds of a hacked American Pie (the first one) of 3k/sec was crazy fast. I played Oregon Trail every time I could during middle school because I didn’t have the game at home. This ad brought me back to CRT monitors and chat rooms.
I doubt I will switch browsers but I have spent my morning reflecting on my childhood. Microsoft was a big part of it and that is something you never think about…
Windows 3.1 came out when I was 10 and was fascinated by the graphics
Win95 had a huge release I was 13 and I can still remember the ‘Start Me Up’ slogan from the ads.
Win98 came out I was just starting High School with the ‘Where do I want to go today?’
Everyone skipped ME because it was terrible and who had the idea of getting rid of MS-DOS?
Win2000 was solid and reminds me of hanging out at my older brothers college house playing Age of Empires.
WinXP launched when I was graduating HS and we all used it up to a few years ago.
Win7 marks when I moved to Austin and started using Apple products
I think I may go buy some Pumps today.
