It’s a Friday night and I leave Austin for the drive out to Steiner Ranch filled with thoughts of beer, steaks and live music. The sun begins to set and the clouds begin to clear, but I’m still in the car and start fidgeting. Did I leave too late? The texas sky begins to look like a canvas and I’m still stuck in this vehicle. Luckily my buddy drives like a maniac and it doesn’t get dark till after 1am in the ATX area.
We pull up like we own the place and take the best seat in the house while Josh Patton and Brandon Sparks begin their journey through songs about love and love lost. I have experienced the Patton Sparks band back in January, but they are different now. Patton’s vocals seem like they have been sitting in a dark room for the past six months and the end product is full of tone and confidence. The lyrics of sorrow have an old school feel to them that speak to you like a well known tune. Spark’s picked up an electric guitar and finger picks it just like his acoustic. This produces a very unique sound and keeps the band’s roughness but with bolder tones.
The evening is perfectly put together with a sweet breeze, great food, enticing drinks, amazing sky and music that just simply fits. Be weary though, a Friday night at Steiner Ranch is full of cougars on the prowl.
