I finally have decided to actually own a big lens again. I have rented all the different Canon versions of the 70-200mm that they offer and really like the f/2.8 IS II. (don’t worry, not much technical talk in this post) Although Canon’s IS II is great I know that I won’t really use this type of lens much for photography. I’m more of an up close and personal type of photographer and I don’t need zoom. The best zoom is your legs.
I did a ton of research. Like, too much research. I suppose it’s fine because I didn’t want to spend 3 grand on something I won’t like or use too often. I landed on an unusual decision. A used Tokina 80-200mm f/2.8. This thing is built well and can even withstand how rough I handle equipment. As far as quality check out the photos below and decide for yourself. This lens is great but does have two issues. Auto focus is loud and a bit slow and there is no Image Stabilization so a tripod is a must for video. I spent around $600 on this lens and it competes with Canon.
